Collections Etc. Catalog

Collections Etc. offers unique gifts and collectibles for holiday and special occasions. Collections, Etc. started life over 40 years ago as a solo sheet mailer. The solo sheet was accompanied by a punch card, giving the offer a sweepstakes feel. The sheet focused merchandise selection, usually complemented by a themed offer.

The cost of expanding the solo sheet format became more expensive due to repeated postage increases, so the company changed to a catalog format in 1997. Extensive experimentation was performed on the format of the catalog. The single price point format used in the catalog at the time was the result of a decision to concentrate on the ease of use for the customer.

Holiday and seasonal gifts are a mainstay of the Collections Etc. Catalog. Find unique gifts for all your friends and family, for pets, and for yourself! Find gifts for the home, collectible dolls and figurines, novelty gifts and more.

Sundance Catalog

In 1969 Robert Redford bought 6000 acres in the Utah mountains. He named the area Sundance after his character in the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. A year later he started the Sundance General Store. Sundance Catalog was started much later.

Twenty years later Redford and a small group investors decided to start a mail order catalog because customers kept writing to the store requesting items they had seen there.

The first catalog was put together in the Sundance firehouse and mailed to a relatively small group of general store customers and friends.

For each edition, Robert Redford always writes something for the inside front cover of the Sundance Catalog. In the first catalog he writes that when you buy something from the Sundance Catalog you help support “American craftspeople, the Sundance Institute for development of new artists in film, music, dance and theater, and efforts to enhance and preserve the environment.”

Lane Bryant Catalog

Lena Bryant was faced with raising her young son alone when she was left a widow at an early age. Being a dressmaker, she borrowed $300 from her brother-in-law to start a business and went to the bank to open an account. The bank misspelled her name on the account, so Lena became Lane Bryant.

She opened a shop with living quarters in the back and began producing dresses. After a pregnant customer asked her for something “presentable but comfortable”, Lane Bryant started making “maternity dresses”, which became very popular.

In 1907 she married Albert Maslin and he took over and streamlined the business. To bypass the newspapers, which by tradition did not mention subjects like pregnancy in the press, the company started their own mail order catalog. By 1917 the Lane Bryant catalog part of the business was making a million dollars a year.

Today the Lane Bryant catalog still offers fashionable and comfortable maternity outfits and plus-sized clothing.

Blair Catalog

In 1910 a fellow law student of John Blair asked him if he’d like to help sell raincoats. (His friend had just inherited a raincoat factory.) After being asked by an undertaker if he had any attractive black raincoats, Blair had an idea. John asked his friend to produce stylish black raincoats with wool fabric adhered to the outside, and plaid fabric on the inside, taking advantage of the relatively new process of rubber vulcanization. Starting with 1200 raincoats, they quickly sold out.

John’s father and siblings helped him mail out 10,000 letters to undertakers across America. He then sent letters to ministers and businessmen, and also expanded his product line. This was the start of the Blair catalog, although it wasn’t called Blair catalog at the time. At first the company was called New Process Rubber Company. By 1916 it was changed to New Process Company. In 1989 the name of the company was changed to Blair.

Today, Blair still offers exceptional clothing for men and women and now also sells quality items for the home, such as comforters, blankets, drapes, pillows, rugs, kitchen items and more. On their website you can flip through the virtual Blair Catalog to get an experience much like flipping through the print version.
